Help us reach our goal!

OntarioGenWeb's Census Project now allows you to search over 1.1 MILLION Ontario residents enumerated in census records spanning from the 1790's to 1911.

“OntarioGenWeb
OntarioGenWeb's Census Project has been invited to collaborate with the Université de Montréal and the University of Guelph on their census projects.

The goal that everyone is trying to achieve is the FREE access of census records, be it an index, transcript or the images themselves. It's hoped that by working together we can all achieve our mutual goals that much quicker.

Université de Montréal's Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH) has been transcribing the 1851/2 Canadian census, first as a 20% sample for statistical analysis and now as a 100% transcription in order to gather as much census data as possible in order to link the information to other records.

The PRDH will share with us the Ontario census records they have transcribed (for posting on our project website) and we in turn will provide them with the census records we have transcribed (with permission of the transcribers). Both websites are FREE for viewing and use by the public at large. Since 2003, the PRDH has been hosting a similar free data browser for the 1881 Canadian census data and is now doing so with the 1851/52 data it has transcribed so far.

The University of Guelph is working on the transcription of the 1871 Canadian census. It's nearly finished but volunteers are needed to bring it to completion. If you would be interested in volunteering to help please contact Kris Inwood

There may be similar opportunities in the future with other organizations and institutions to pool data. Agreements will only be made with those who offer data for FREE.

Volunteers are still needed to help us with our 2007 and 2008 goals. We're thisclose to reaching our goal to transcribe the entire 1851 Ontario census so if you have a free afternoon or two please consider helping us finish! The 1851 can be transcribed entirely from home.

Our 2008 goal is the 1861 census! This census is currently only viewable on microfilm (available worldwide through your local Family History Centre) so we need extra help from anyone who has microfilm access. So step up to the challenge and help get this census year represented! Transcribe a census (or two). If you've benefitted from the use of this site show your appreciation by adding to it - volunteer!

If you have access to the 1861 Ontario census but don't wish to transcribe or proofread PLEASE consider being a copier volunteer. Copiers simply pick a census and copy the images to paper or CD for someone else to transcribe. (If you are doing research why not copy the census you're using so it can be transcribed?)

If you've found this site useful, please take a moment and give our volunteers the thanks they deserve.

“OntarioGenWeb Since our debut in 1999 we have strived to reach the goal to transcribe every Ontario census and place the transcripts online for free viewing.

With the help of numerous volunteers we have been steadily progressing towards this goal BUT help is still needed!

The goal for 2008 is to transcribe the 1861 Ontario census. Please help us reach this goal!
